These days, Tom Fulp is probably best known for his work with The Behemoth, behind games like Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers. Way back in the day, I knew him as the guy in charge of Newgrounds. I spent a ton of time (probably too much) in high school playing free Flash games on the site. I still remember playing through Pico’s School, a point-and-click adventure about a school shooting. It hasn’t exactly aged well (unless you count the more recent remakes), but it still reminds me of being a kid, playing morbid video games when I should have been doing homework.
Newgrounds has grown a lot since the early days, becoming a place for a huge number of creators to put up content of varying quality. It even became the birthplace of some big names in games today like The Binding of Isaac.
Newgrounds turns 20 years old today, and to celebrate, Fulp and company are streaming a bevy of the site’s hosted games on Twitch.
An organization that includes some of Twitch’s most popular streamers has been accused of using aggressive trademark legislature against competitors. Team 2G, a collective that hosts personalities such as Tim “Trick2G” Foley and Akinola “Blakinola” Verissimo, has allegedly filed a trademark for the term “sub wars” and is being accused of trying to prevent anyone from outside of the organization using it.
The term “sub wars” refers to when people who subscribe to a Twitch channel are invited to compete against each other or the streamer they support. They’ve proven a popular way for personalities to interact with fans, but they’re are also popular with viewers, as the streamer will often add their own commentary or perspective on the actions of those in the spotlight. It can be a tool for learning or a means for comedy, depending on the direction the broadcaster wants to go in.
We had another awesome episode of Twitch Weekly this week! If you want to know more about the all of topics we discussed – the super duper crazy awesome /r/Twitch user Jikkircraft (@Jikkir on Twitter) has put together a run down of all subjects + timestamp links to each of those sections! Check it out below:
Survivor GameZ VI is upon us and the main event is this Sunday, April 19th, at 1pm PDT/4pm EDT/9pm BST!
The Survivor GameZ is the baddest deathmatch event around, fully realized in the post-apocalyptic landscape of DayZ. While zombies abound and supplies are limited, real life friendships crumble as players stalk each other until only one is standing (or maybe bleeding out slower than everyone else). Hunt or be hunted: this is the most dangerous game!
Remember Twitch Plays Pokémon from last year? That’s okay, neither does anyone else (Kappa). That won’t stop advertising agencies from trying to capitalise on a year-old, played out Internet phenomenon though!
TechCrunch has reported that Procter & Gamble is working with Twitch to launch “The Old Spice Nature Adventure.” For three days, starting April 16, Twitch users will be able to control a real man in a real forest full of joke traps, all by screaming commands into the chat. The “adventure” is going to get pretty weird, the campaign’s said to feature talking trees, and much more importantly arm wrestling with a bear. A fake bear, but a bear nonetheless.
