Twitch dominated E3 streaming

Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft dueled it out two weekends ago at E3 to determine the biggest name in gaming. But audience data shows that the real winner was streaming giant Twitch, which announced today it again broke streaming records over the expo weekend.

With more than 21 million unique viewers and  11 million total hours watched, Twitch’s five-day event coverage more than doubled from the previous year. In total, Twitch covered eight different press conferences, and hosted 85 other segments featuring upcoming games and content. Continue reading Twitch dominated E3 streaming

The Witcher 3 Twitch Streamers Banned for Using Broken Street Copies

Fans should wait for the official launch date

Unfortunately, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has been sold early by a number of stores, most of them apparently located in the Middle East, and some players have already been streaming gameplay from the title on Twitch.

Obviously, the company is not very pleased with the situation and it has announced via an official Twitter message that all those who are caught doing so will be banned from the service as quickly as possible.

Authorized streaming for bought copies of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt can only take place on May 19, when the new title from CD Projekt RED is officially launched.

Gamers who really want to see the game in action can still find Twitch channels that show it, some of them with hundreds of viewers, but the company will probably move fast to remove them in the coming hours and days.

The development team is quite unhappy to see images and videos from their experience offered before the official launch date.

CD Projekt RED was hacked last year, and info about the story was leaked to the public, along with images showing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in an unfinished state.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is launching simultaneously all over the world

The new action role-playing game will be launched on the PC, the Xbox One from Microsoft and the PlayStation 4 from Sony on the same day.

Unauthorized streaming before the launch date is a problem for CD Projekt RED because it allows fans who are very interested in the game universe to see some of the core story elements even if they might lack all the context needed to interpret it.

Broken street dates for video games have become less of an issue during the past few years, but there are still stores that risk the wrath of publishers by selling copies earlier than they should.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the final adventure that will star Geralt and is designed to be bigger than both previous titles in the series combined.

For the first time in the series, the developers are implementing a full open world structure, and players will have full freedom to explore cities and to move through the wilderness as they seek to accomplish their goals.

Xbox caters to Twitch streamers with upcoming Windows 10 app

Microsoft has big plans to bring gaming on Windows 10 and Xbox One closer together. One key to that strategy is the Xbox app the company announced back in January, which lets you access Xbox Live features from your PC. And after checking out a demo of the app at GDC in San Francisco, one thing is pretty clear: Microsoft is trying to tap into the booming market of Twitch game streamers and YouTube personalities.

“IT’S OUR ASPIRATION TO MAKE EVERY GAME BETTER ON WINDOWS 10.”

Your Xbox One already lets you record gameplay footage and share it on multiple services, but when you bring that concept to your PC the functionality opens up quite a bit. Using the Xbox app on Windows 10, you can browse all of the clips you recorded on your console, and even edit them using some rudimentary tools to trim the length. But the app goes one step further by letting you download those clips, and then cut and mix them however you want using any video editor already on your PC. You can then upload them to the social network of your choice; and if you’re someone who wants to share their Sunset Overdrive exploits on YouTube, it’s a pretty ideal set-up.

Of course, the same also goes for Windows 10 games, which you can record simply by using the Windows + G command. During the demo the process seemed very streamlined. Developers don’t need to do anything to bring this functionality to their games; even titles you purchased through services like Steam will work the same as games you buy through the Windows Store. “It’s our aspiration to make every game better on Windows 10,” says Microsoft’s Richard Irving.

Given the booming popularity of gaming personalities on YouTube and Twitch, it seems like an obvious move for Microsoft, and the new app will even recommend popular broadcasters for your favorite games as new Xbox Live friends. It lets you do other things, like message friends and check out achievements, but so far the recording functionality seems like the most impressive and important piece. The Xbox app will be available to Windows 10 users later this year, and it’s just one part of a much bigger theme that was outlined by Xbox head Phil Spencer during a talk earlier at GDC: Microsoft wants to bring gaming back to Windows in a big way.

“We want this to be the best version of Windows ever for gamers and game developers,” Spencer said.

Save the Date: TwitchCon 2015, September 25-26 in San Francisco!

The big news which was being teased by Twitch this week has finally been revealed [and you’ll have to do your own drumroll, I’m afraid, blame budget cuts]: It’s the first-ever TwitchCon, and it’s coming this September.

Twitch announces TwitchCon for September 25 – 26 in San Francisco

Conventions, conventions, conventions. Everybody gets a convention. Facebook has F8. Twitter has Flight. Salesforce has Dreamforce. TechCrunch has TC Disrupt.

And now, Twitch has TwitchCon.

The company describes the conference as “an interactive convention for broadcasters and viewers alike to meet each other, learn how to take your Twitch game to the next level, and play together.”

Plans are still underway, and Twitch would like the community’s input on what should happen at the event. A new Twitter account, @twitchconsf, opened moments ago, and Twitch staff will be starting a dialogue there, as well as using the #twitchweekly Twitter tag.

A press release states that those who attend will be able to meet their favorite broadcasters, have the opportunity to experience live content broadcast directly from the convention center, and “learn from the community’s thought-leaders.”

There currently isn’t much other information, but Twitch says there will be more details on tickets, scheduling and accommodations in the weeks and months to come.

The livestream hosts initially trolled viewers by announcing a purple Twitch hoodie was now available on Amazon, but unfortunately that’s not true. Shame, it was a nice hoodie.

Twitch Has Acquired GoodGame To Make Pro Partnerships More Appealing

Video-game-streaming service Twitch just announced that it will acquire GoodGame, a full-service agency dedicated to serving the needs to pro-gamers and brands looking to be involved in the eSports industry.

GoodGame has built a business over the last 10 years by sponsoring its own competitive esports teams, connecting brands with popular third-party teams, creating viral content for brands looking to market to gaming enthusiasts, and more.

“We’ve been responsible for funneling more than $10 million toward players, teams, tournaments, and other parts of the esports ecosystem,” writes GoodGames CEO Alex Garfield in a letter on the company’s site explaining the sale.

The move lets Twitch capture more of the value generated by the growing esports industry, which has already been a huge key to its success — on any given day, Twitch regularly has more people watch League of Legends than concurrently watch major news networks.

With GoodGames on its team, Twitch can further ingratiate itself in the business of running teams and getting money to professional gamers. That in turn makes these popular streamers more likely to stick with Twitch when showing off their gaming chops, rather than jumping over to competitors like YouTube or Steam Broadcasting.

It also expands Twitch’s interactions with big brands. While Twitch already makes it very easy for Twitch partners (users with a large number of subscribers) to make money by playing video ads on their streams, there’s likely ample room for Twitch to move up-market in terms of quality and revenue thanks to its huge audience and focus on video content. GoodGame’s team brings with it existing working relationships and an expertise in pitching the gaming audience to companies with big budgets for brand advertising.

Twitch to Acquire GoodGame

Twitch takes another big step in video game broadcasting and esports by adding more services to its partner program — bringing advertisers new ways to reach this rapidly-growing audience, and providing more revenue opportunities to broadcasters and players

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – December 9th, 2014 – Twitch, the leading video platform for gamers, today announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire GoodGame, the world’s first full-service agency dedicated to the esports and live video game broadcasting communities. Since its inception nearly a decade ago, GoodGame has grown into one of the gaming industry’s most progressive talent and content companies. The acquisition will allow Twitch to harness GoodGame’s unique service package, as well as its staff’s industry expertise and community leadership, in order to offer an even broader array of support and monetization opportunities to the greater Twitch community.

As esports and live video game broadcasting continue to grow at an explosive pace, advertisers have struggled to understand how to most effectively engage and reach this massive audience. GoodGame has helped solve this problem with an arsenal of fresh, non-traditional engagement methods uniquely suited to the ever-evolving digital media audience. This, coupled with its efforts to establish clear standards for reporting and communication of value to sponsors, has allowed GoodGame to succeed at welcoming major sponsors and advertisers into the community.

Under the leadership of its CEO, Alexander Garfield, the company has created a model that keeps players and content creators focused on what they do well while monetizing their work more effectively via advertisements, sponsorships, and merchandising. With GoodGame’s specialized skill set added to Twitch’s already industry-leading partner program, Twitch streamers will soon have even more ways to build their careers as content creators.

“GoodGame has an amazing reputation in the industry for its expertise in both sponsorship sales and talent support. Their passion for helping content creators and pro players achieve success has elevated the entire industry in the minds of brands worldwide,” said Kevin Lin, COO of Twitch. “GoodGame was a natural fit for Twitch because of our shared experience in creating compelling monetization opportunities for content partners and helping sponsors get the most out of their investments. We have worked with GoodGame CEO Alexander Garfield for several years, and there is a clear opportunity for him to bring his skills and experiences to many more of our partners.”

“We view GoodGame as a conduit,” said Alexander Garfield, CEO of GoodGame. “Its purpose is to help support as many players and broadcasters as possible by channeling revenue into our community, and making sure it stays here. I can think of no better way to accomplish that goal than by working hand-in-hand with the very same platform whose passionate audience has essentially built our company. We wouldn’t have made it to where we are today without Twitch and its users – we’re excited to give back.”

About GoodGame
GoodGame is an all-in-one talent and content company focused on gaming and esports. Over the past decade, its staff of industry veterans has worked with teams, represented players, managed tournaments, created content, and brought numerous marquee advertisers into the gaming space.
